Stephen has over 35 years of experience in investment management.
Stephen was Founder and Managing Partner of Affirmative Investment Management (AIM), a specialist impact fixed income manager which was acquired by MetLife Investment Management in December 2022. He is an advisor to MetLife on sustainable investing.
Currently, he also serves on the boards of the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, Lombard Odier Asset Management and the Investment Committee of the British Museum.
He served a five-year term as a member of the Board of Guardians of the Future Fund (Australia’s sovereign wealth fund) and served on the ASIC (Australian Securities and Investment Commission) Advisory Board. He also served on the board of the National Centre for Indigenous Excellence and on the board of QBE Insurance Group for seven years, chairing the Investment Committee and the People and Remuneration Committee. He was a founding member of the Champions of Change Coalition, an organisation focussed on achieving leadership gender equity.
Stephen spent 20 years at Goldman Sachs and was co-CEO and then Chairman of Goldman Sachs, Australia and New Zealand. Before this, he was head of Goldman Sachs Asset Management International (GSAMI). Before that, he was head of the Investment Management Division in Asia and also spent eight years as GSAM’s Chief Investment Officer for international fixed income.
He joined Goldman Sachs in 1992 and was named a Managing Director in 1998 and a Partner in 2002. He was based in London, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Sydney with Goldman Sachs.
Stephen was named as an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) in the 2019 Australia Day Honours. He joined Council as Chair in February 2024.
