When Fauna & Flora International and The Independent newspaper announced a public competition to write the best 1500-2000 word essay on ‘The Future of English Forests’, we had no idea how passionate the English public would be.
The judging panel read through the more than 150 individual entries, with the winner being chosen from a shortlist of 13. The judging panel consisted of Tony Juniper (environmentalist and former Friends of the Earth head), Dr Oliver Rackham (University of Cambridge academic and woodlands expert) and Mike McCarthy (The Independent environment editor).
The winner has been announced as Andy Byfield in The Independent today.
Andy wins a £5,000 prize generously donated by an anonymous FFI supporter, and his essay published in The Independent.

Fauna & Flora International wishes to sincerely thank everyone who submitted an essay, the judges and The Independent.
