International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP) staff have just informed us of the sad news of the death of a mountain gorilla in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda, over the weekend.
The black back, Mizano (the only black back in the group), from Habinyanja group was killed by poachers in Bwindi on Friday morning. From the information we have so far, it appears that the poachers speared the gorilla and then ran away, leaving him to be attacked and killed by their dogs. UWA are now investigating the incident and the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project will perform a necropsy tomorrow.
For updates as they come to hand please check IGCP’s website here.
Fauna & Flora International (FFI), together with WWF and AWF are founding members behind the IGCP, whose mission is to conserve mountain gorillas and their forest habitat.
