Katie has more than twenty years experience in conservation, and is both a seasoned field practitioner and well-respected international conservationist. She assumed her leadership role for Fauna & Flora International (FFI) as Executive Director in the United States in 2003, and has substantially grown the constituency for the work of FFI globally, through a strategic focus on endangered species and habitat as flagships. Katie draws strongly from years spent living in Rwanda, where she was Director of the International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP) following the civil war and genocide. Katie completed her Master's degree at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental studies, and her BA at the University of Virginia, with a major in Environmental Studies and a minor in French. She currently serves as an Environmental Leadership Liaison with Rachel’s Network, and has enjoyed varied Board service with non-profit organisations. She lives in Washington, DC with her husband and two daughters.
This year, FFI is proud to join more than 13,000 partners across sectors to celebrate the third annual Giving Tuesday, a day dedicated to ‘get out the give’.
Now in its third year, Giving Tuesday is a worldwide movement that celebrates the power of giving in all its forms and follows the widely popular US shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday. In contrast, Giving Tuesday allows everyone to kick off the holiday season with a day dedicated to charitable giving.
Through the power of social media, the Giving Tuesday global partners ignite a powerful conversation showcasing and motivating the generosity of people all over the world to bring about real change in communities.
The mission of creating real change in communities is paramount to all the work we drive at FFI. The current threats facing our environment are complex, intertwined and at times overlooked.
Our global team of conservationists, scientists, community leaders, educators and peer organizations are at work every day, in remote places around the world, leading global biodiversity programs that protect the natural world and make a positive difference in all our lives. The work at hand delivers for flora, wildlife, ecosystems and the people who depend on them. We succeed when we facilitate solutions that allow people and nature to co-exist and thrive, resulting in meaningful, lasting change in some of the most vulnerable communities around the world.
As we approach year-end and celebrate this day of giving, we are fortunate to benefit once again from an end of the year Challenge Grant from Newman’s Own Foundation. For every unrestricted contribution made by FFI Supporters, Newman’s Own Foundation will celebrate by matching dollar for dollar up to a total of $100,000.
Wherever you may choose to make a year-end gift, we applaud the efforts of our partners and supporters to elevate the conversation around charitable giving and igniting real change in communities all over the world. We hope you’ll join us in spreading the word; below we’ve provided a few ways to participate:
