Please Help Mangroves

Please help save mangrove trees.

They are so utterly essential, yet inexcusably ignored.

They provide harbors for dolphins and nurseries for fish. They provide homes for proboscis monkeys and praying mantises, nest sites for herons and hummingbirds, and feeding grounds for Bengal tigers and fishing cats. They provide local people with food, medicines and fuel.

They store more carbon than the US and China combined emit each year.

So, when they go, all that life goes with them.

And right now, that’s what’s happening – at a terrifying rate.

Plantations are poisoning their waters, loggers are hacking them to shreds, unscrupulous developers are ripping them out and ill-considered industrial expansion is destroying them en-masse. Today a staggering 10% of deforestation emissions globally are being caused by mangrove destruction.

The ramifications of losing them would be unbearable. Fauna & Flora is working hard to help these marvelous trees hold on, but we are desperately in need of your support.

We’re planting thousands upon thousands of seedlings to replace those being lost, while protecting the survivors from impending destruction.

With your support, we could begin to turn this struggle in our favor.

So please, donate now and help save mangroves.

How Fauna & Flora is helping to save mangroves

Across our project portfolio, we are striving to help save mangroves, working with in-country partners to ensure that mangroves receive the attention they deserve.

Fauna & Flora works across an 800,000-hectare seascape in Honduras, the vast majority of which harbours a rich diversity of species including the critically endangered hawksbill turtle, the Antillean manatee and one of only two rare lizard species found exclusively in mangrove swamps. Along with our in-country partners, we are aiming to reforest an area of mangroves estimated to account for an additional 3,000 tonnes of carbon.

In Cambodia, where the coastline is fringed by almost 80,000 hectares of mangrove forest, we are working to establish a national network of marine protected areas and restore previously deforested mangrove areas.

In east Africa, mangroves are under significant threat due to illegal exploitation for firewood and construction poles. Restoration measures have been put in place which include the planting of over 35,000 mangrove seedlings in Kenya, and an increased number of local ranger patrols to protect mangroves.

By making a donation today you could support our incredible efforts across the globe to help save mangroves. Thank you.

Who are Fauna & Flora?

Fauna & Flora is the world’s oldest international conservation charity. Over the last 100 years, we have been on almost every frontline of conservation and literally saved species from extinction. We work to protect plants and animals around the globe – never wasting enormous sums of money on excessive publicity or silly gimmicks – instead spending 94% of our income on charitable activities.

If you value the natural world – if you think it should be protected for its own sake as well as humanity’s – then please support Fauna & Flora International.
