About: Magnolia grandis

Magnolia grandis is one of the world’s most threatened trees with a global population of fewer than 50 individuals. It is also one of the most beautiful, boasting dark red fragrant flowers and long, leathery leaves.

The decline of this species is largely due to the loss of natural forest as a result of illegal logging and land clearance for commercial plantations. Many of the remaining wild trees are found on the edges of agricultural fields or in small remnant forests near villages.

Magnolia grandis facts:

  • Magnolia grandis can grow to a height of 20 metres and has large leathery leaves up to 35 cm long.
  • Until recently, the species was thought to occur only in a few patches of limestone forest in Southern China (an area totalling just 10km2).
  • Surveys carried out between 2011 and 2014 by the Global Trees Campaign and partners in northern Vietnam discovered 35 new individuals growing in the wild – a significant addition to their known distribution.
  • In Vietnam, the species shares its home with one of the world’s most threatened primates: the Tonkin snub-nosed monkey.
  • In 2015, 60 seedlings were planted in natural habitat in North Vietnam, helping to boost the population size of this extremely rare tree.

Fauna & Flora International (FFI) has supported the conservation of M. grandis through the vital work of the Global Trees Campaign and its partner, the Center for Plant Conservation. This support has included building the capacity of five nature reserves to protect the species and developing community nurseries to plant these threatened seedlings into the wild and support the long-term recovery of the species.
