The primary objective of Fauna & Flora International's partnership with mining giant Rio Tinto is to help the company conserve and manage biodiversity within its mining sites. In the past five years Fauna & Flora International has helped Rio Tinto's subsidiaries develop a framework for managing biodiversity at mine sites, including facilitating discussion involving academic institutions and NGOs. Other developments include:
Shared expertise and resources are used to integrate biodiversity planning into mine site management and provide the foundation for wider strategic support for biodiversity conservation in countries where Rio Tinto and Fauna & Flora International operate.
Developing the capacity for governmental regulatory bodies to operate effectively in their work with the mining sector is another important focus. In Guinea, this activity is ensuring improved environmental management of the exceptionally rich biodiversity of the Nimba Mountains.
Fauna & Flora International provides technical assistance to Rio Tinto in Madagascar and with our partner NGO, Madagasikara Voakajy, we are working to protect, monitor and raise awareness of three endemic fruit bat species threatened by habitat loss. The bats are vital to maintain forest processes and promote post-mining recovery of natural vegetation. We are also producing recommendations to protect the important endemic reptile and amphibian fauna of the region. In partnership with Missouri Botanic Gardens, we are working to protect one of the largest remaining fragments of littoral forest and assist in the development of tree nurseries to restore degraded areas.
In South Africa, Fauna & Flora International and ResourceAfrica are working on the development of local economic opportunities in South Africa’s Kruger2Canyons biosphere reserve to provide environmentally sustainable alternative livelihoods for the local community after mine closure.
