Chief Technical Advisor CEPF Phase II Bushmeat Project, Liberia
Fauna & Flora International
Salary: circa USD 30,000
Duration of contract: 12 months, with potential for 6-month extension
Location: Sapo National Park, Liberia
FFI has secured significant funding for an integrated GEF program entitled ‘Establishing the Basis for Biodiversity Conservation at Sapo National Park and in South-east Liberia’ (BCSNP). The French Government and the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Facility (CEPF) both fund complementary projects to the above-mentioned GEF program. The CEPF-phase II project “Consolidating And Learning From Livelihood Interventions In Support Of Biodiversity Conservation And Management At Nimba Mountain (Guinea), Sapo National Park (Liberia) and Tiwai Island (Sierra Leone)” will focus on the following main objectives:
The Chief Technical Advisor will mainly focus on the Liberian component of the CEPF project. Sapo National Park and its surrounding forests are a regional centre of endemism and biodiversity. Various initiatives are underway to establish basic park infrastructure, strengthen the capacity of protected areas personnel and promote the development of alternative sustainable livelihoods such as communal forestry. Current livelihood interventions mainly focus on improved home-gardens, establishment and registration of communal forests and various agro-forestry activities. Only limited attention has been dedicated to the bushmeat issue in and around Sapo NP. FFI anticipates that pressures on bushmeat in and around Sapo will increase significantly in the next decade or so. This is mainly attributable to population growth and the anticipated start of logging and mining activities around Sapo NP next year. The latter will open up areas that were hitherto inaccessible. This will most likely result in increased human influx and increasing hunting pressures in and around Sapo National Park. There is a real danger that without a proper situational analysis of the dynamics of hunting and bushmeat trade now, future alternatives to bushmeat and/or more sustainable ways of bushmeat utilization cannot be established in a timely manner. The lessons learned from the Nimba Bushmeat and Hunting Initiative will provide a valuable framework to investigate and pilot activities to reduce unsustainable off-take pressures on bushmeat in Sapo.
The CEPF phase II project in Sapo aims to provide much needed information on the spatial and temporal dynamics of bushmeat trade and hunting as well as provide a clear knowledge base of customary/indigenous natural resource management practices. It is this information that is urgently required and that will enable us to make well-founded decisions on potential sustainable alternative livelihoods.
In essence, the CTA will study the current situation in Sapo, analyze the data gathered, suggest alternatives and pilot alternative livelihood approaches. FFI anticipates that further funding will be secured to consolidate and build on this "first phase" project in Sapo.
Additionally, lessons learned from the micro-enterprise and tourism activities in Tiwai Island might well constitute an important catalyst to support sustainable bushmeat hunting activities in Sapo. This project therefore aims at consolidating the CEPF phase 1 interventions in Tiwai and Nimba whilst applying lessons learned to support the development of sustainable bushmeat activities and alternative livelihoods in Sapo.
To apply for the position, you will have an advanced degree in a conservation/natural resource management or related area and have at least five years’ experience in the conservation field of which you will have spent three years in a developing country, preferably in West Africa. You will have proven project management, communication and technical skills and a demonstrated understanding of the relationship between conservation and development, in particular in relation to bushmeat hunting and trade issues in Africa. In addition you will have an understanding of working in post-conflict or otherwise unstable situations and you will have the maturity and ability to lead a project independently in a remote setting with difficult logistics.

Programme Director, Environmental Markets
Fauna & Flora International
Salary range: £38,500 plus 8% pension
Duration of contract: Three year fixed-term contract, with potential to extend
Location: Fauna & Flora International, Cambridge, UK
FFI is developing a new Environmental Markets programme, which will examine and challenge emerging markets for ecosystem services (water, carbon and biodiversity) and their benefits / risks for conservation and communities. We aim to translate emerging markets for ecosystem services into sustainable finance for practical conservation in the field. This lies at the heart of our strategic plan for 2009-2013. FFI hopes to make a significant contribution to the huge challenge of bridging the gap between emerging global/national mechanisms for monetizing ecosystem services and the realities of local management of natural resources on the ground.
FFI is seeking a strategic and results-orientated individual with proven expertise in environmental economics and the valuation of natural resources and ecosystem services to develop and implement FFI’s strategy on environmental markets. The successful applicant will have strong practical experience in developing projects that capitalize on the emerging markets for ecosystem services (water, carbon and others) in accordance with international best practice and will have strong links to policy discussions in this area. They will have a degree or equivalent level qualification in a relevant discipline and substantial experience in a related role.
