Support for Romania’s national parks

27/04/2007

Fauna & Flora International is delighted to have been nominated for funding from the Mitsubishi Corporation Fund for Europe and Africa to improve protected areas in Romania.

Credit: Abigail Entwistle/FFI.Romania’s forests contain important populations of fauna including 60% of all European brown bears and 40% of European wolves. Its parks harbour some of the largest remaining areas of pristine forest in Europe. Grasslands, subterranean caves and an extensive river network add to the richness of the park system that also includes the Danube Delta, a World Heritage Site and Europe’s largest wetland.

Despite its natural treasures, Romania’s protected areas suffer from a severe lack of management capacity. Pollution, industrial agriculture and the overexploitation of natural resources have all taken their toll on the variety of plants and animals in the reserves.

Romania remains a relatively poor country and its citizens need support to develop livelihoods that do not destroy the natural resources on which they rely. Through this new conservation programme, Fauna & Flora International and its partners will deliver training in conservation policy and practice to conservation professionals, students and others that are working in conservation and sustainable development in Romania.

The Mitsubishi Corporation Fund for Europe and Africa will leave a lasting legacy for conservation and community engagement in Romania; enabling local conservationists to return to their respective conservation areas with new skills and the latest knowledge in park management.
