Fauna & Flora International (FFI) and Italian oil and gas company eni, through its exploration & production (e&p) Division, have worked together since 2003. Biodiversity is one of the criteria considered crucial to the company’s environmental performance. The partnership, building on the principles of the Energy and Biodiversity Initiative, has made a significant difference to biodiversity awareness and management.

Current activities

FFI is helping to integrate biodiversity and ecosystem services considerations into eni e&p Division’s operational practices worldwide. The mapping of all operations against areas of high biodiversity and ecosystem services value is underway. Current activities focus on:

  • Identifying, with a global perspective, sensitive operating sites
  • Understanding operational life cycle risks
  • Designing targeted action planning
  • Maximizing the opportunities to contribute positively to biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services retention

Top of its class

In 2008 eni e&p was recognised as the leader in corporate sustainability for the oil and gas sector by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI). The DJSI ranks companies according to their business, social and environmental performance. Biodiversity is one of the criteria evaluated as part of the environmental performance.

The FFI partnership has made a significant contribution to eni’s high score in the DJSI biodiversity performance. This is reflected at both an operational level, through field projects carried out in Italy, Ecuador, Norway and Alaska, and a strategic level, with the aim to integrate biodiversity management into the company’s environmental management systems.

What our partner says
