Sophie Benbow

Sophie has always been passionate about water and was a keen rock pooler and crabber from the age of six. After university research projects, focused on cetacean biology and distribution, she moved to Madagascar in 2007 where she led coral reef monitoring teams for Madagascar’s first locally-managed marine area. Coral reef research evolved into octopus fishery management and for several years she was the lead scientist on the south-west Madagascar octopus fishery research project, engaging with local communities to implement suitable management techniques and grappling with over seven years’ worth of fisheries data. Sophie joined Fauna & Flora International in 2013, first focusing on marine projects in Asia-Pacific before switching her attention to the Eurasia region. She is currently managing marine projects in Turkey and Cape Verde and undertaking scoping to expand FFI’s marine work in the region.
